Will Cosmetic Tattoo Removal Work For You?

Many dermatologic surgeons caution that removing a tattoo completely is not possible. The way tattoo's are applied makes them almost permanent so removing them is difficult. There are many surgeons that will never guarantee complete removal. Don't be discouraged though. There are several methods of cosmetic tattoo removal that have been proven to be very effective. Whats left of the tattoo depends on many different factors. The size, location, how the tattoo was applied, and the individuals ability to heal will all affect how successful the cosmetic tattoo removal is.

Depending on how the tattoo was applied will also effect the outcome. A tattoo that was applied by an experienced artist may be easier to remove because the pigment was evenly injected into the same level of the skin. Old tattoo's are typically easier to remove than new tattoo's.

The reason Doctors can't predict the amount of the tattoo that can be removed is because there is over 100 different tattoo inks available today.

Does Tattoo Removal Hurt?

The simple answer is  yes. It hurts more to some people than it does to others. The black pigment absorbs all of the laser wavelengths, so it's the easiest to remove. Some colors like green, selectively absorb the light from the laser laser so they can only be treated by selected lasers based on the pigment color.

Before having a laser procedure done, most doctors will recommend that non-aspirin products, like Tylenol, should be used. Aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents such as Ibuprofen can produce bruising after treatment.

A prescription anesthetic cream will be applied 2 hours before the cosmetic tattoo removal session. It is then cleaned off just before laser surgery begins. The pulses from the laser light  are applied onto the tattoo. This breaksup the pigment up and over the next few weeks your body will rebuild the skin cells.

Often times it will require more than one treatment. The number of sessions that you need will depend on things like the ink that was used and how deeply the tattoo was applied. Typically 3 week intervals are required between sessions so that the pigment residue can be absorbed by the body.

After your cosmetic tattoo removal surgery the area needs to be kept completly clean. Your Doctor will continue to apply an antibacterial ointment to the area. You can bathe but you cannot scrub the treated are. The skin will tend to feel sunburned for the next few days and may have a slightly red color to it. Scabs are also possible so be sure to let them heal naturally. After the skin heals healing you will gradually notice the tattoo fading.
